Maybe Next Year Bears…

Once again the Chicago Bears found a way to throw their season away yet again. The Bears lost to the horrendous Minnesota Vikings yesterday even with their starting quarterback out with a concussion the entire second half. During overtime Robbie Gould missed a 47 yard field goal to win it and the Vikings capitalized on their very next possession.

Even though the Gould had a chance to win it in overtime this game falls onto the head of head coach Marc Trestman. The offense of play calling in the second half was absolutely atrocious. He was trying to run out the clock with too much time still left in the game when the Bears could have put it away. He needs to get it through his head that Bear’s offense is the best aspect of the team right now, the classic hard-nosed Bear’s defenses are behind us. On a brighter note, Alshon Jeffery continued to emerge as a force in the Bear’s offense including this spectacular touchdown grab.

Moving forward from this Sunday, The Bear’s are currently 6-6 and one game behind the Detroit Lions for first place in the NFC North. Mathematically the Bears aren’t eliminated from playoff contention but catching the Lions with 4 games remaining is going to be near impossible, especially when the Lions have the tie breaker over us. If the Bears do somehow squeak into the playoffs then I’ll be the first to admit I’m wrong, I just don’t see any chance this year given the teams current injury status. Currently I’m already looking forward to this offseason and what the Bear’s should do in my opinion.

One thing we have learned this year is that the Bear’s offense is one of the most explosive offenses in the league. Marshall and Jeffery have become the most electric wide receiver duo in the entire NFL and Matt Forte has proven that he is still one of the most valuable running backs around. The biggest surprise this season has been the production of the offensive line. What a difference first-round pick Kyle Long has made to this group as the O-line has kept Cutler or McCown upright for the majority of games this season. I don’t know if it has occurred to anyone else, but is this the reason both the Bear’s quarterbacks have played so well this year? Are we really under the impression that Josh McCown is this good of a backup? Or have the weapons around him in the Bear’s offense inflated his ability? I am truly concerned that we haven’t seen too much of a differential between Cutler and McCown. Contrary to what most Bear’s fans believe, I think this season has showed that we can part ways from Cutler this offseason. He has been a mixture of highlight reel throws, turnovers, and time spent on the bench with injuries. Someone please tell me why we need Jay Cutler as our future quarterback? Instead, the Bears should let Cutler walk as a free agent this offseason and use the extra cap-space that will be freed up to use on our ailing defense. Then this April we draft quarterback Johnny Manziel from Texas A&M to take over the reins. Clearly this is the riskier move drafting Manziel but I truly believe that risk would pay off. Manziel would be thrown into one of the most powerful offenses in the league where he can hand it off to Forte and have options on the perimeter of Marshall, Jeffery, and Bennett. Not to mention Manziel is pretty explosive himself, give him a watch this college football bowl season and give it a thought.

In McCown We Trust?

Are you guys starting to see a common theme in my latest posts? That I´ve pretty much been wrong about all my latest predictions? Well, once again I didn´t disappoint with my evaluation of Bear´s backup quarterback Josh McCown. Before the Bear´s Monday Night game in Lambeau against the Green Bay Packers I called Josh McCown a chump, and said only a miracle could lead us to victory. I honestly think Josh McCown read my post about him prior to kickoff because he played like an absolute STUD and carried the Bears to a victory. Now let´s flashback to last Sunday´s Bears vs Lions game. Starting quarterback Jay Cutler struggles the entire second half and Coach Trestman throws in McCown, down 8, with one drive to tie the game up. McCown proceeds to lead the Bears down the field for a touchdown with seconds remaining. Trestman of course calls the two worst play calls on both attempts of the 2-point conversion and the Bears lose a heart-breaker. Yet again McCown showed the fans and the coaching staff that he deserves to be the starting quarterback until Jay Cutler is actually 100% healthy. So until that day comes I´m hopping on the Josh McCown bandwagon. The guy plays with fire and you can tell it inspires the rest of the team. If you haven´t given the man a chance yet, try giving him a shot, he just might surprise you.

Josh McCown - a goon, but he´s our goon
